I have realized a few things this past week in Arizona:

I have MAD vertigo. Even now I still feel like I am rocking back and forth on a boat.
SPF 70+ works.
Super Mario Brothers 2 is the most fucked up video game ever.
I forgot how much I loved Oreos and Cheez-Itz.
I have a patch of white skin on my back. It's like vitiligo or something. I tried to tan my back but this one area just would not get any darker.
Donkeys need to shut the fuck up.
According to some kid named Stav, being nostalgic means you're smart.
Camels are the most intelligent creatures on Earth.
Makin' Bacon next Wednesday at The Verity Room. It's going to be amazing.

Now... to finally get a run in, study for Economics and finish this Bukowski book.

1963
Where were you when John F. Kennedy died?

1980
Where were you when John Lennon died?

2009
Where were you when Michael Jackson died?
I was in a parking lot on Winnetka and Sherman Way waiting for my mom to come out of the Water & Power office. Twenty minutes earlier the AMP radio DJ announced that Michael Jackson was in the hospital. My mom and I were concerned, but didn't really think anything of it. I forgot what the song was, but after it ended KIIS went to dead air for a few seconds. Finally the DJ came on, saying "I don't really want to do this." and broke the news. I just stared at Sutter Middle School across the street and couldn't believe what I just heard. I called Joan and asked her to confirm. I called Ken but he didn't pick up. I called my sister but she didn't pick up either. I waited impatiently for my mom to come out as my radio began playing "Man In The Mirror". The moment I saw her and her red shorts I bolted out of my car, only one sandal on leaving my right foot to get burned by the black tar.

"MICHAEL JACKSON IS DEAD!", I shouted. "MOM, MICHAEL JACKSON DIED!"

"WHAT? WHAT? HUH?"

I kept repeating this over and over. It was all that could come out of my mouth and I wasn't even making any sense of it.

Three businessmen were coming out of Subway as I was in hysterics.

"Who died?!"

"MICHAEL JACKSON! MICHAEL JACKSON IS DEAD!"

"WHAT? NO!"

The older businessmen commented that he thought he was abroad. The middle aged businessmen just stood gaping at me. The youngest businessmen whipped out his BlackBerry. My mother and I ran back to the car, eager to get home and turn on the news, check on the computer. Michael Jackson could not be dead. On the drive back I got a hold of Ken. TMZ said death, KCAL 9 said coma. We both agreed TMZ was the more reputable one, but I still didn't want to believe it. I left a voicemail on my sister's phone.

When I finally got home I left it to FOX 11 and just couldn't believe the headline I was reading. It was no help that OhNoTheyDidn't! crashed LiveJournal. Even at the gym as I was sweating on the elliptical I couldn't trust Larry King. Michael Jackson literally shut down Los Angeles news stations and the Internet.

It's weird that it took Michael Jackson to cause me to write my most detailed LiveJournal entry in ages, but this is one of those universal moments throughout history that you're going to remember for the rest of your life.

So my old neighbourhood is just a council vote away from becoming Sherman Oaks. I feel like this could cause a major identity crisis for myself in a stupid, stupid way. I spent part of my childhood in Van Nuys JUST ACROSS THE STREET from Sherman Oaks. One side of Burbank Boulevard was Sherman Oaks. The other side of Burbank Boulevard was Van Nuys. I happened to be on the less priveliged side of the street. Even when I was six there was always that resentment, but I never denied who I was. I may have lived in Chatsworth longer, but at heart I am 100% fucking Van Nuys. Now that I have the chance to nominally claim roots to a much more upscale and reputable community in the San Fernando Valley, I don't think I could be honest to myself if I did. I'm not 100% pure-fucking-I-went-to-Notre-Dame-for-high-school-and-hung-out-at-the-Fashion-Square-in-the-afternoon Sherman Oaks girl. Hell, I would've ended up at Grant-- and then gone to the Fashion Square to hang out in the afternoon. This also kind of encroaches upon my identity as a Chatsworth resident which was always weird to deal with. It's home but it's not home in the same way Van Nuys is. I can walk and drive around my streets with ease, but there's a psychological factor I can never explain that will always place Chatsworth as Home #2. There's nothing wrong with the West Valley. Chatsworth, Northridge, Porter Ranch, they're all my homeboys. Just... Van Nuys, North Hollywood and Sherman Oaks are moreso.

I don't know why this entry got so long. It just pisses me off. You can tell the people starting this annexation movement weren't raised there. They moved there to start families in modest homes while they drive on the 405 to their jobs in the city.

What a weird city Los Angeles is. What a weird city.
